Ivan Shishkin "The Mast-Tree Grove" 1898 - Istra, Russia

Ivan Ivanovich Shishkin was a Russian landscape painter closely associated with the Peredvizhniki movement. Ivan Shishkin owned a dacha in Vyra, south of St Petersburg. There he painted some of his finest landscapes. His works are notable for poetic depiction of seasons in the woods, wild nature, animals and birds. In 1891 he was appointed professor-director of the landscape class in the Academy's Advanced Art School. In 1898 he completed his painting The Pine Grove and died on 20 March in St Petersburg while working on his new painting.

Novouralsk is a closed town in Sverdlovsk Oblast, Russia, located on the eastern side of the Ural Mountains, about 70 kilometres north of Yekaterinburg, the administrative centre of the oblast. It was formerly known as Sverdlovsk-44. Although it occurred during World War II and was named Novouralsk in 1954, it was kept secret until 1994. It has had closed-town status since its establishment.

Kolyvanskoje Lake - Barnaul, Russia

Lake Kolyvan, colloquially called Savvushka, is a lake in Russia located at the foot of the Kolyvan Mountains in the northwestern part of Altai. The lake is at an altitude of 337 meters over 4.5 km2. Its maximum depth is 28 meters. An optical research station was installed in 2004 at the top of Bolshaya Mountain which overlooks the lake.

Best known for his pin-up paintings for Brown & Bigelow, Elvgren studied at the American Academy of Art. The federal constitutional law of the Russian Federation only says that the colours of the flag are "white", "blue" (синий, or dark blue, as Russian has two colours that are called "blue" in English), and "red". The Federal Constitutional Law on the State Flag of the Russian Federation does not specify which shades the colours should be.

The Monument to the Sunken Ships is the symbol of the city of Sevastopol, on the disputed Crimean peninsula. Located in Sevastopol Bay, it was designed by Amandus Adamson and built by Valentin Feldmann in 1905.

Ladya - Samara, Russia

The stele "Ladya"  is a monumental sculptural composition, one of the sights of Samara. It is a massive concrete structure of twenty meters in height. It was erected in 1986 by the project of the Samara architects Anatoly Yankin and Igor Galakhov.

The monument stylized depicts an ancient sailing boat floating on the waves, personifying the history of the region when ships of Russian merchants and knights passed by the banks of the Volga.

The first mention of the name "samovar" in the inventory of copper products made in the factories of a certain Grigory Demidov from 1745. In the Kremlin armory, there is a samovar made of transparent quartz - a gift for Tsar Peter the Great. The largest working samovar is located in the building of the railway station in Kharkiv, Ukraine. It is 180 cm high, has a capacity of 360 liters, and weighs 300 kilograms.

 

Kokoshnik - Moscow, Russia

Kokoshnik is a traditional Russian headdress worn by women and girls to accompany the sarafan. The kokoshnik tradition has existed since the 10th century in the ancient Russian city Veliky Novgorod. It is still to this day an important feature of Russian dance ensembles and folk culture and inspired the Kokoshnik style of architecture. 

Matryoshka - Chelyabinsk, Russia

There is an opinion that the matryoshka is not a traditional product of Russian craftsmanship but was created in 1890 as a result of inspiration with Japanese Daruma and Kokeshi dolls, including the doll-image of the sage Fukuruma or Fukurama, which contained the other six.   

They were brought from Japan by the wife of an industrialist and patron of the arts, Sawwa Mamontov.
