Phoenix is the most populous city in the Phoenix metropolitan area, also known as the Valley of the Sun, part of the Salt River Valley. Phoenix was settled in 1867 as an agricultural community near the confluence of the Salt and Gila Rivers and was incorporated as a city in 1881. It is in the northeastern reaches of the Sonoran Desert and has a hot desert climate.

There are 19 Indian reservations in Arizona inhabited by the Navajo, Apache, Hopi, and Pima tribes.

The meteor crater (Meteor Crater) was formed by the impact of an iron asteroid about 40 meters in diameter, which ejected about 175 million tons of earth and rock into the air, creating a crater a kilometer wide and several hundred meters deep. There is now a museum on the site, where you can e.g. watch the movie Impact.
