During Stalin's rule, Kazakhstan was known for its labor camps (лагерь) and as a place of deportation, among others Polish population and Chechens.
Kazakh deserts were one of the reasons for the location of nuclear weapons tests for the Soviet authorities. Within Kazakhstan, two major ecological disasters have been recorded: the drying up of the Aral Lake and the high radioactive contamination of the large zones.
