The city was founded according to tradition in 1252 by Jarl Birger.

Numerous monuments originating in Poland (e.g. a tent captured by Sobieski near Vienna, the armor of Polish kings, banners of the Polish army, cannons) can be seen in Livrustkammaren and at the Army Museum in Stockholm.
